I'd just thought I'd post this up before I add some updates posts on Greta, the Micklem bridle, and... I'll get around to that Traditional Dress post part 2 one of these days (still trying to think of how to put it, bear with me). School begins again in two days, so I'm milking these last couple days of freedom. Granted, I feel a lot freer in college than I ever did in public school. My schedule, even though I got screwed over a bit but I'm a freshman with the min amount of hours so I was expecting that, is quite accommodating for riding and doing other things. Anyway, enjoy some Butters action from yesterday. My eq has a lot left to be desired, mainly I'm popping up a bit over fences (still getting used to the feeling of a jump) and I'm rounding my back in two-point and over fences, that's mainly from lack of core muscles (well, a different set than what's needed in dressage). At least I'm anchoring my heels more! Enough of that, enjoy Butterball the wonder horse.
Aw butters is so cute! And don't worry, jumping is hard to get used to but you're a good rider so you'll get the hang of it soon enough!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm DYING to read the Micklem post. I'm seriously considering buying one of these for my horse when he goes back into work in May! He's a very fussy TB and I've heard excellent reviews.
Thanks! So far I love it, and Greta - who, while not fussy, did headshake and liked to hang on the bit - has been headshaking-free and definitely coming through in the bridle and not tense. So far, so good!

Although I have different problems than you and Greta (my horse is super, super soft in the mouth, hates poll or noseband pressure at all, and tends to be a bit tense in his jaw/poll) I'm glad to hear someone else is having success with it. Maybe I'll finally bite the bullet when he goes back into work and buy one...

ReplyDeleteButters looks super cute, and you look like you're having loads of fun! If you shorten your stirrups two holes or so, that will help you stay forward out of the saddle for an extra split second over the fence. As for rounding your back, just think about keeping your chest open and up, shoulders back, and you'll find the rounding problem goes away.

They feel so short when I'm riding, and then I look at the video and I think "WOW! Those are still almost dressage length haha!" I'm going to have to up it to 'jockey length', or at least that's what jumping length feels to me haha.
