Better than a rope halter?

It's certainly more expensive ;)

This is the Arc de Triomphe Premium Halter. Those odd leather pieces on the cheek cross underneath to apply pressure on the poll as well as the bridge of the nose. They also remove to convert the halter into a grooming halter. (I've always just unbuckled the halter and buckled it around the throatlatch if I need to reach the jaw or anywhere the halter is covering, so I personally thought "grooming halters" were a bit silly, although perfect for the horse and rider who have it all!)

I wonder if this works as well as a rope halter, without the "rope halter" look, as you can even install a nameplate on it on SmartPak. (Nobody ever said rope halters look incredibly snazzy, even Greta's pink one, but they certainly look pragmatic.) However, for $135, I won't be the one to try it out. I love Greta's Kensington SmartPink halter. Love. It.

Plus, it's cheaper to do groundwork in a $2 rope halter and then transfer that to a normal halter. A pretty proven method as well haha!

What do y'all think?

  2. I prefer a leather halter over a rope one, but I don't need to spend that much on one and don't need any special effects. I use just a plain leather halter that I have used for three horses over almost 20 years.

  4. I think I'll stick with Quillian's halters, twice as nice, and only 45. Repairs are cheap too.

  5. Aaaah I have a few past clients who I'm sure will be buying this. Why put real training into your horse when you can buy lots of fancy expensive things and delude yourself that they will majikally fix all your problems for you?

  6. Lol andrea.
Yeah ima pass too. I splurged a year ago on a nice leather halter since Yankee kept breaking his old leather one. I made it triple stitched, nameplate, two buckles AND a throatlatch snap. OMG I LOVE. It was seriously one of the best purchases. It was about $95, for s custom halter I think thats pretty awesome. Can't remember where I got it from now, but they are all custom made and gorgeous and very functional.
Normally though I just buy everything off ebay :P

  7. Haha Andrea!

I only use Greta's rope halter for groundwork, and it's just one of those $2 ones I bought online. I usually only have to use it for one lesson, and then Smarty Pants gets the idea and we go back to her normal halter. I don't like to use rope halters all the time because then horses will sometimes become desensitised to them, and the ultimate goal of the rope halter to me is to be able to do all that stuff in a normal halter! When Greta's pink plaid one runs out on me, which probably won't happen for another century, then I'll get a leather one, because they're snazzy. As for this halter.... well, it's silly when you can do groundwork in a $2 rope halter and go back to a cheaper leather halter. More time, less expensive ;)

  8. I think one of the benefits of a rope halter is that it won't break when you need it not to. I would never tie a horse in a rope halter or turn him out in one, but I had a breakaway halter break when I was in the middle of teaching a horse something and I think this one would do the same.

  9. Good point Dom... a halter breaking when you're trying to handle an already unruly or stressed horse is NOT how you keep that training moment positive haha!

  11. Great post! I have more leather halters than I need for my one horse but I've bookmarked that website for the future.
