My OTHER hobby...

So I do ride. We all know that. But I do other things too. While I may not rock the dressage show circuit, nor do I really care to right now, I am proud to say I have made progress in the Austin area art "circuit". Notice the unintentional smug looks on some of the pictures. I'm not cocky, I swear!

"Forest Unicorns" on display at gallery in Austin

"Yata" on display at a district show. First in it's division

"Sunkawakan" on display at the same show. Second in it's division haha.

"The Last Unicorn" one of my favorite works.

(Title Pending) one of the works I will submit to the A.M.O.A. (Austin Museum of Art) as part of their local and emerging artists exhibit set for next year. It's worth a shot!

This was the 2010 logo of my school district's annual art show.

  1. These are beautiful!!

Did you know there's a brand new Last Unicorn comic book out? They're doing I think six issues of it -- the first one came out at the end of April. It's *gorgeous* -- highly recommend picking it up. Anyway, coming around to my point: in the back they advertise a Last Unicorn art contest. I think submissions are open until the end of the year? You should think about entering! There are prizes (don't remember what they are) and I believe the submissions are judged by Peter Beagle himself (the author).

  2. BEAUTIFUL COMIC!!! I can't seem to find it anywhere for sale though.... From the few illustrations I did see it looked strikingly similar to the movie, so I hope it's not just like watching the movie in pictures. The animation is definitely one of my primary inspirations. It is just so rich and whimsical, it just begs for its own interpretation! But if I can find that comic or the contest, I'm in!

  3. It looks like you used several types of media and have developed a recognizable style. Very impressive! Congrats on your awards.

Watercolor with pen and ink is one of my favorites, so I really like "Sunkawakan".

  4. Thanks Val! Yeah, I'm happy to see a style starting to develop as a branch out from other things besides horses, though horses will always be the first thing that comes to mind when I want to doodle a doodle or two! Actually, "Forest Unicorns" "Sunkawakan" and "Yata" are all entirely digital pieces, but the same concepts used in painting and ink apply when you're doing them on a tablet, except you don't have to wait for them to dry and you have an UNDO button haha! The second to last piece is almost entirely watercolor with some colored pencil and ink accents. Watercolor and ink are my preferred media, and when used together, you are right: they make such a wonderful combination when used right. Ink pieces usually are very bold and watercolors are often softly blended but rich, so to use the two together creates a wonderful blend of bold lines and soft and rich colors that makes my eyes smile!

  6. I was on deviantART a LOOOONNNG time ago.... but I kept getting viruses from the site, so I had to shut it down. I've always considered going back on now that I have better protection, but I'm still wary. It would be a great experience though.

  7. I just remembered to check these comments again -- sorry for the late follow-up. I saw the Last Unicorn comic at my local shop. They do mail orders and the guy who runs the shop is SUPER friendly and helpful, so if you can't find it anywhere else you could order from here:

If you have a local comic shop though, you should try giving them a call. Seems like it would be a popular title to stock!

  8. Thanks for the link! I do know we have a comic shop in town. I never been in there, as I'm not into comics, but I for this comic I can make an exception haha!! If this shop doesn't have it, I will definitely call the store you linked me too!
