May the odds be ever in your favor...
Sorry, I'm just geeking out about the new Hunger Games movie. Much better than watching re-runs of Jersey Shore with the roommate haha! Somebody please name their next gutsy eventing mare Katniss! For me? Anyway, if you have not read the books, then shame on you. They're excellent.
AND another book I want to shout out about is The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, the Horse that Inspired a Nation. It reads very much like Seabiscuit and not like a Saddle Club novel haha! It's a very good book. I smell yet another horsey movie in the future!
Speaking of movies, my new favorites are The Queen (a few years old, but just now saw and loved it) and the newest Jane Eyre movie with Mia Wasikowska. It's very well done and wonderfully romantic, and gave me the same feel as the book. Kudos.
And now... pictures from this morning of Greta and I jumping up to about a foot! She is the BOMB!

Riding 6/6/2011
AKA Look at the little harem girl! With her net people have also said she looks like Zorro, The Dread Pirate Roberts, a beekeeper, and a bandito! Or... bandita?
LOL whatever works, right? Notice it's also too hot for a normal saddle pad. We're moving to the baby pad (yay for a properly-fitting saddle!) and yesterday we dawdled around the property bareback. Whee!
Also, I try to ride in the outdoor arena too, but seeing as we have had some record-setting heat (a high or 101 today) and even in the morning (I'm talking 8 AM!) there's enough heat and humidity to steam vegetables (usually there's wind, but there was NONE today!!) then we've been pretty much covered-arena-bound for the past couple of weeks!
Yeah.... nothing new :)
"Hold me close now tiny dancer...." haha
LOL at her awkward-yet-super-engaged lengthening!
See? I told you we're getting that cantering thing down! She can hold this for a few strides. Getting her to hold it for a whole lap around the arena is something else haha! It really makes me seat muscles BURN! But it's not bad.
A little strung out, but better than a few months ago!
Kind of the same thing with the trot. Enough strength to hold this loveliness for a few strides, but still working on longer periods.
This is what most of the cantering looks like. But like I said, nothing bad! :)

Bareback photos
Firstly, I think I almost have a Prestige saddle in the works, but I need to ride in it more to see. I'm so used the Wintec's massive 18" seat (I need that size for the flaps, not the bum haha) that being in a seat that is smaller feels incredibly weird. I hope it's something I can work around. If not, the search continues (the best saddle so far has been a Spirig saddle, just lovely for both of us, but as you can imagine, it was incredibly out of the price range!)
Oh, and the Prestige is brown (Carol the saddle fitter is awesome, especially with my noobish saddle buyer antics) :)
Anyway, some bareback riding pictures from Thursday night. Greta is definitely picking up her back feet (Joe the farrier will love to hear and see that!) and her back was super swingy in the video (she had a little puppydog tail going swoosh-swoosh-swoosh back and forth for most of it!) While she was definitely trying to hang on my hands for much of the ride, I finally got some nice, light, self-carried half-halts and steps of trot towards the end, and that's when I said "NOW you can rest".
While this ride certainly wasn't the best, I compare the video to the one from November and I see a great deal of improvement as fas as picking up her back feet and quite quickly coming to the bit once I start to pick it up (it's a lovely feeling). Her ears are starting to do that wonderful, floppy, relaxed pose as well.
The three pictures before the last picture are of us doing turns on the forehand (turns on the forehand and haunches are also something we have been working on) and the third picture and the very last picture are my favourites :)
